Bass Rock is famous for having the largest breeding Gannets in the world, as depicted at the well known Sea Bird Center. North Berwick, with its surrounding coast and islands, inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island and Kidnapped, while his engineering cousins built many of the famous lighthouses round the coast.
If you've got children, beach access and supervision are ideal; parents can join in the swimming and sand digging or watch the action from a large sitting room bay window - a thirty second dash away! Around the town are so many things to do, from boat tours to outdoor tennis to crazy golf.
In the bay or further off shore there is every type of water sport available, from surfing to sup boarding, from kayaking to rowing close to safe sandy beaches. For the more adventurous there are sea caves, rocky promontories and also the islands to explore.
For those who like to swing a racket, there are tennis courts in a lovely open setting in the middle of town, and if it's golf you're after, some of the best links courses in the country like Muirfield lie along a coastline that has been dubbed the Golf Coast, a label that lives up to it's billing.
